The Nema 17 6-wire stepper motor (42x42x34mm, 1.2A, 1.8° per step) is a versatile, high-torque unipolar/bipolar motor commonly used in 3D printers, CNC machines, and robotics. Its 6-wire configuration allows it to operate in unipolar mode (using the center taps) or bipolar mode (ignoring the center taps for maximum torque).
Key Specifications
- Condition: Brnad New
- Frame Size: NEMA 17 (42x42x34 mm faceplate).
- Body Length: 34mm (often referred to as a 42-34 motor).
- Step Angle: 1.8 degree (200 steps per revolution).
- Rated Current:1.2A per phase.
- Voltage Range: Typically driven at 12-24V DC using a constant-current driver.
- Holding Torque: Generally between 30 Ncm (56 oz-in) and 35 Ncm (63 oz-in).
- Shaft Diameter: 5mm (standard “D” shape)
Core Applications
- 3D Printers: Ideal for Y-axes, dual Z-axes, X axis or heavy direct-drive extruders.
- CNC Routers & Laser Cutters: Provides precise linear positioning for small-scale desktop engraving machines.
- Automation & Robotics: Excellent for precise speed and position control in custom DIY projects.
Typical Wiring (4-Wire Bipolar Setup)
If you are converting it to a 4-wire setup for a 3D printer:
- Phase A: Often Black (A+) and Green (A-).
- Phase B: Often Red (B+) and Blue (B-).
- Center Taps: Usually White and Yellow (these should be taped off and ignored if using a 4-wire driver).
For reliable operation, ensure your motor driver current limit is set to match the 1.7A rating to prevent overheating or missed steps.
How to Connect to standard 4-Pin Drivers (A4988, DRV8825, TMC2209):
- Identify the Pairs: Use a multimeter to check resistance. The two wires with the highest resistance between them are the outer ends of a coil phase. The center tap will show half of that resistance to either end.
- 4-Wire Bipolar Mode: Connect only the four outer wires (Line 1, Line 2 to Phase A; Line 4, Line 5 to Phase B). This delivers the highest possible torque for your application.
- Frame Size: NEMA 17 (42x42x34 mm faceplate).
- Body Length: 34mm (often referred to as a 42-34 motor).
- Step Angle: 1.8 degree (200 steps per revolution).
- Rated Current: 1.2A per phase.
- Voltage Range: Typically driven at 12-24V DC using a constant-current driver.
- Holding Torque: Generally between 30 Ncm (56 oz-in) and 3Ncm (63 oz-in).
- Shaft Diameter: 5mm (standard “D” shape)

The DRV8825 stepper motor driver carrier is a breakout board for TI’s DRV8825 micro stepping bipolar stepper motor driver. The module has a pinout and interface that are nearly identical to those of the A4988 stepper motor driver carriers, so it can be used as a higher-performance drop-in replacement for those boards in many applications.
