TPU stands for Thermoplastic Polyurethane. Thermoplastic Polyurethan can be re used by melting since it’s ultimately a thermoplastic. They are 100% recyclable. Rubber on the other hand can’t really be recycled. That’s why you’ll see companies trying to find uses for old tires such as shredding them and using the material in playgrounds as a replacement for sand.
In certain blends it can become very soft, but TPU material offers many benefits and features that makes it suitable for many consumer and industrial uses. 3D printed parts with TPU are durable and have the ability to withstand ambient temperatures of up to 80 degrees Celsius. TPU material is flexible as compared to rigid PLA and ABS materials.
TPU filament is abrasion resistant, can withstand impacts and is resistant to many chemicals. There are different versions of TPU material but in the main it can be classed as two types. Firstly known as Polyether Polyurethane and secondly Polyester Polyurethane. With both having different characteristics that can be suited to a specific need.
