SHARP Distance Measuring Proximity Sensor Analog Infrared 10 to 80 cm GP2Y0A21F2Y with Cable

The Sharp GP2Y0A21YK0F is a popular analog infrared (IR) distance sensor module, widely used in robotics and automation for obstacle detection and distance measurement. It consists of an integrated package containing an infrared emitting diode (IRED), a position-sensitive detector (PSD), and a signal processing circuit. The sensor offers a measuring range of 10 cm to 80 cm, providing an analog voltage output corresponding to the distance.

Description and Operation

The GP2Y0A21 operates by triangulation: it emits an infrared beam which reflects off an object. The angle of the reflected light, which varies based on distance, is detected by the PSD, and the signal processor converts this into an analog voltage.
  • Key Advantage: It is less affected by object reflectivity, environmental temperature, or operating time compared to other sensors.
  • Output: The output voltage ranges from approximately 3.1V at 10 cm to 0.4V at 80 cm.
  • Ideal Application: Suitable for robot cleaners, non-contact switches, and energy-saving sensors in equipment like vending machines.

Specifications

  • Distance Measuring Range: 10 cm to 80 cm.
  • Operating Voltage: 4.5 V to 5.5 V.
  • Average Current Consumption: 30 mA (typical).
  • Output Type: Analog Voltage.
  • Update Period: 38 ms ± 10 ms.
  • Package Size: 29.5 × 13.0 × 13.5 mm (approx. 1.16″ × 0.5″ × 0.53″).
  • Weight: 3.5 g.

Features

  • Simple Interface: Three-wire interface (VCC, GND, Signal) makes it easy to connect to microcontrollers like Arduino.
  • High Performance: Provides better performance and more accurate, consistent results than many other IR alternatives.
  • Compact Design: Small footprint, making it easy to embed into small devices.
  • Stable Operation: Not easily influenced by target reflectivity or ambient conditions.
  • Included Connector: Typically uses a Japanese Solderless Terminal (JST) connector.

Usage Tips

  • Power Stabilization: The sensor draws current in short, large bursts. The manufacturer recommends placing a 10 F or larger capacitor between VCC and GND close to the sensor to prevent voltage fluctuations.
  • Measurement Accuracy: The output is not perfectly linear. A lookup table or a formula (distance 27 / Voltage) can be used to convert the analog voltage to distance in cm.
