3D printer for DIY Reprap Kossel delta Rostock putt tension spring damping spring Printer Parts
On a DIY RepRap Delta 3D printer (such as the Kossel or Rostock), the small carbon steel tension springs (typically 36.5mm total length) are used as diagonal push rod dampers to eliminate mechanical backlash (joint play). By pulling the parallel rods inward toward each other, they ensure the ball joints or clevis joints remain tightly seated, preventing micro-wobbles that cause artifact lines, effector tilt, and poor print quality.
- Identify the Pairs: Your delta printer has 6 diagonal rods organized into 3 parallel pairs (one pair per vertical tower).
- Determine Placement: You need 3 springs total (one spring per pair of parallel rods). Position the spring horizontally between the two rods, usually about 1/3 of the way up from the print head effector.
- Secure the Hooks:
- If your carbon fiber push rods have dedicated anchor pins or notches, slip the 5mm end rings of the spring directly over them.
- If your rods are smooth, wrap a small zip-tie (cable tie) tightly around each of the two rods. Leave a tiny loop in the zip-tie, and hook the ends of the tension spring into those loops.
Why This Upgrade is Important
- Eliminates Joint Play: Trapped air gaps or wear in ball joints allow the effector to tilt under the sideways forces of the Bowden tube. The spring constantly pulls the joints taut.
- Dampens Vibrations: Acting as a stabilizer, it absorbs sudden inertia shocks from high-speed travel.
- Improves Dimensional Accuracy: Keeping the rods perfectly parallel and seated prevents the print head from shifting slightly off its calculated path.
(Note: Do not overtighten or use overly stiff springs, as too much inward tension can bend thin carbon fiber rods or cause the ball joints to bind and cause friction).
